“…When everything was hopeless, Abraham believed anyway, deciding to
live not on the basis of what he saw he couldn’t do but on what
God said he would do….”
Romans 4:17-18 MSG
Am I walking with my eyes open or closed?
The problem of walking with my eyes closed is that I start running in to things. When I get up in the morning, I usually make it from our bedroom to the coffee pot unharmed, with no stubbed toes, bruised forehead, or twisted ankle.
And I do it all in the dark!
As if my eyes were closed.
I’ve walked the path hundreds of times so I know where the ‘obstacles’ lie. That is until Ella (the dog) leaves her bone in the middle of the floor. Or my wife brings the laundry basket up after I’ve gone to bed.
Or if I’m not quite with it and mis-count the number of stairs. (7 steps between each landing by the way.) Therefore it is best to walk with our eyes open!
What about my walk with God?
Do I walk this walk of faith with my eyes open or closed? Eyes open – I see the giant stopping my victory.
Eyes closed – I see the hand of God guiding a small stone to its perfect mark.
Eyes open – I see the overwhelming enemy surrounding me.
Eyes closed – I see the the Angels of God surrounding me.
Eyes open – I see the frailty and futility of even trying to get in on the healing power of the stirring waters.
Eyes closed – I see the power in the words of Jesus to rise and walk.
Faith is more about what I cannot see than what I can see. Will I walk with my eyes closed?
